YEAR I

Credits
3 LIT 101 Text Analysis: A survey of literature from The Iliad to Modern Era, you read texts and analyse them in the class. Instructor is Zeynep Altok. Class participation and assignments have a key role.

3 LIT 111 Mythology: Term starts with a quick information on what is Mythology? Class goes in accordance with Text Analysis. Iliad, Odyysey and some other texts are to be read. Class participation is not as important as Text Analysis. Second term dias are shown and analysed in class. Instructor is Lale Kula Özerden.

3 LIT 121 Advanced English: A very hard obligatory course given by Fulya Soytürk. Main aim is equipping the student with advanced writing, comprehension and reading skills. It is very tough but it pays off in the upcoming years where you would have to write many essays.

3 LIT 131 History of Western Culture: Best course in school, given by professor Murat Belge, it is a survey of Western Literature and Civilization, starting from the term civilization and Middle Ages. Literary, artistic,architectural and musical aspects are discussed as well as political and historical aspects. The course is given in Turkish but the exams are in English. The instructor is Professor Murat Belge and it is a pleasure taking a course from him.

3 COMP 101 Information Technology, Comp. 101 class, helpful for one who can not use a computer or MS Office.

3 HTR 101 Atatürk Ilkeleri, History class, it was very boring in my year, however some say that it depends on the instructor. History of Turkish revolution is taught.

TK 101 Turkish Language: It is helpful in terms of learning how to write academicaly. Some projects are to be prepared, such as writing journals and reading novels.

+ 1 elective from the full list: The best elective course for Comparative Literature students is Sociology, because it helps a lot while reading texts. That way you can focus on sociological aspects of a text. The course teaches a lot of new interesting things too. It is easy to pass if instructed by Semra Somersan, exams are multiple choice which make things easier. Do not select, Art and Culture,Business, and Politics.

YEAR II
Semester 1
3 LIT 201 The Development of the Novel I: A very nice course instructed by Professor Jale Parla, the course is on Don Quiote and it is als the only text to be read throughout the semester. Poetics of the Novel is the other name of the course, and novel theory is also discussed.

3 LIT 211 The Development of Drama I: From Greek Tragedians to Shakespeare, the course is on Drama as a genre. Instructed by Professor Nazan Aksoy.
3 LIT 221 History and Literature: From Middle ages to Modernity, this course is a literary and historical survey of the time. It is on understanding history through literature, one would have no problem to pass if he passed Lit 131 and Lit 101, it is a mixture of them.
3 LIT 271 Linguistics I : Historical Linguistics: We did not have this course last year.
+ 2 electives from the full list: Lit 281, Turkish society and culture, is a nice course which I have enjoyed to have, it is about Turkish Modernity mostly,first semester there is a project to be done and presented, the course is instructed by Elif Safak . Lit261, Science Fiction is also very enjoyable, it is about science fiction as a genre books like Time Machine, Frankenstein, Brave new World are to be read. Instructor is Bulent Somay. Lit 251, Translation, is also helpful and enjoyable, instructor is Zeynep Altok, however every week there is a translation homework. The Rhetoric of Fiction is also a great course, it is about the narrative voice and development of it. Very few students take this course therefore it is more enjoyable to have it. Instructor is Rana Tekcan.
